United States Postal Service Offers FREE Direct Mail Kit | Surefire ...

Posted on by Chris Marentis

We just recently posted that the United States Postal Service (USPS) is offering a discount on direct mailers that include a QR Code; and it seems they?re still attempting to boost their sales by offering more discounts, tools and support for local businesses.

?

If you have a USPS account, then you probably received a recent email in your inbox advertising the USPS Free Direct Mail Kit. The kit is designed to help businesses target consumers within a certain mile radius to their business address by sending out direct mail pieces. To get the kit, you simply provide your contact information on the input page, and they deliver it to you via mail. In addition, they are offering postage for direct mailers as low as 18 cents per mailer.

?

As we?ve shared before, it?s good to have a variety of marketing tactics in your arsenal to target your consumers, including both online and offline marketing. And though the use of direct mailers has decreased with the invention of the Internet, they can still be a powerful marketing tool if used effectively with certain target markets.

?

For more information on the USPS offer and how to use direct mailers for local business, check out the USPS video tutorial and the Every Door Direct Mail webpage.

?

Do you use direct mail for your local business? If so, what tactics have you found to be most successful when using direct mail to reach your target market?

Weird life preserved, Pompeii-style

Jack Matthews / Oxford Univ.

This juvenile example of the rangeomorph fossil Charnia measures just two-thirds of an inch (17 millimeters) in length. Note the fine detail of the branches.

By Alan Boyle

Researchers have found the weird shapes of the world's earliest-known baby animals preserved in rock on Newfoundland's coast, apparently thanks to a Pompeii-like volcanic blast that covered the little critters with ash about 579 million years ago.

Like Pompeii's famous ash-encased forms, the ash layer solidified over soft bodies that otherwise might have been lost in the process of fossilization. In this case, the preserved animals are bizarre, fern-shaped animals from a little-known geological age known as the Ediacaran Period, which ran from 635 million to 542 million years ago. This is the age that marked the appearance of the first complex multicelled organisms ? strange-looking creatures that disappeared when the Ediacaran Period gave way to the Cambrian Period.

These particular creatures were rangeomorphs, fern-shaped organisms that lived deep below the sea surface. They bear a superficial resemblance to sea-pen corals, but their detailed body plan is like nothing that exists in the world today. Because they lived so far underwater, they didn't make use of photosynthesis, as most plants do ? but they may not have had all the charactistics of animals, either.

Scientists from Oxford and Cambridge University, in collaboration with the Memorial University of Newfoundland, found more than 100 of the fossil shapes in rocks at Newfoundland's Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve. Oxford's Martin Brasier said a volcanic eruption on a nearby island apparently overwhelmed "an underwater 'nursery' of baby Ediacaran fronds." Brasier is one of the authors of a report on the research due to appear in the July issue of the Journal of the Geological Society.

"The fossilized 'babies' we found are all less than three centimeters long and are often as small as six millimeters?? many times smaller than the 'parent' forms, seen in neighboring areas, which can reach up to 2 meters in length," Brasier said in an Oxford news release. "This new discovery comes from the very bottom of the fossil-bearing rocks, making it one of the oldest bedding planes to preserve 'animal' fossils in the whole of the geological record."

Another co-author, Cambridge's Alexander Liu, said "these juveniles are exceptionally well-preserved, and include species never before found in rocks of this age. ... The discovery confirms a remarkable variety of rangeomorph fossil forms so early in their evolutionary history."

Alex Liu / Oxford

This fossil shows the fine detail of a juvenile Trepassia wardae's branching pattern. The specimen is just 3 millimeters wide - about a tenth of an inch.

Alex Liu / Oxford

This photo shows what may be a previously unknown type of fossilized organism. The organism has a long, curved stem with fine "branches" at its tip. The branches represent some of the smallest organic features found within the rocks at the Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve in Newfoundland.

Alex Liu / Oxford

Oxford University's Jack Matthews photographs rangeomorph fossils at Newfoundland's Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve.

Martin Brasier / Oxford

Waves crash against Newfoundland's rocky shore at Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve.

The Ediacaran Period was an crucial era in evolution because it's thought to mark life's?transition from mostly microbial forms to a profusion of complex, multicellular organisms.

"We are now exploring even further back in time to try and discover exactly when these mysterious organisms first appeared, and learn more about the processes that led to their diversification in an 'Edicarian Explosion' that may have mirrored the profusion of new life forms we see in the Cambrian," Brasier said.

More about the earliest creatures:

In addition to Brasier and Liu, the authors of "A New Assemblage of Juvenile Ediacaran Fronds From the Drook Formation, Newfoundland" include Jack Matthews and Duncan McIlroy.

Dog Containment Kit Information - Free Pets to Good Home

Yes, you can keep your dog in the yard without any concrete or wooden walls to do this with the dog containment kit. Thanks to technology and groundbreaking concepts and innovations that have made it easy for radio dog fences and dog containment kit to be invented.

Fascinating Dog Info

Look at the following facts and figures:

Millions of dogs go missing every year while another 20 million are rubbed out in the U. S. alone. If your dog goes missing, the chance that you will not see it again is nearly 20 percent.

Tens of thousands of greenbacks pay for dog bite claims annually.

Importance of Dog Containment

This leads folk to the seriousness of the dog containment kit.

Taking an effective containment system may have been one of your wisest choices that you made in your life. The question is: What type of containment is the most acceptable and produces the most impressive results?

The Drawback of Electrical Fences

These fences are described as effective and humanitarian since the dog gets a mild correction if it attempts to jump over and runs away to the streets. Nonetheless these fences still need you to dig a ditch round the yard so that you can bury and conceal the wires. This means doing a large amount of work before it's possible to use the system. Anyway clever dogs still manage to work out the right way to jump over the obstruction without getting the static heart beat.

Wireless Dog Containment

This dog containment kit is simpler primarily as you don't have to dig around to kill the wires. You may even create a round and extraordinarily wide wandering area which can often be up to over 10 acres.

You can create a wireless border which will give your dog a mild jolt if it makes an attempt to leave the area. It'll take only roughly an hour to install the wireless containment mechanism and you won't even get your hands soiled. You only need to go round the fringe of the projected rambling area while holding the dog collar. It can be programmed simply with a high tech controller unit.

You have to place flags around the boundary before fastening the collar around the dog?s neck. The wireless containment fence will let you programme the level of correction excellent for your dog by selecting one out of 5 different containment levels as well as a tone correction.

The Dog Line provides tips in dog training as well as supplies dog keepers with Radio Dog Fence . You can obtain more applicable information and Australian Dog Fence on the internet site of The Dog Line.

Debby floods neighborhoods in northern Fla.

SOPCHOPPY, Fla. (AP) ? Debby destroyed homes and businesses, washed away roads and flooded neighborhoods in Florida before the once-large tropical storm drifted out to sea Wednesday, leaving behind a sopping mess.

At least three people were killed in the storm. More than 100 homes and businesses were flooded and officials warned the waters may not recede until next week in some places. The storm knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of customers, though most had electricity restored by the time Debby left the state.

The tropical storm formed in the Gulf on Saturday and gradually made its way across the Florida, drenching the state for several days before it weakened to a depression. The windy, rainy weather ruined vacations for some.

In Live Oak, a small city in northern Florida, water was up to the roofs of some homes and cars were submerged. In other places, residents stood in several feet of water as they checked out the damage to their homes.

"The water came in so fast last night," said resident Johnny Torres. "We were lucky to get out what we could."

In Crawfordville, a small town located in the crook of Florida's elbow just south of Tallahassee, main roads were impassable.

"There's more water that anybody, no matter how old they are, has ever remembered seeing," Wakulla County Commission Chairman Alan Brock said. "It's not just people on the river, it's neighborhoods, it's places that have never been flooded."

Even though Debby lost its strength, emergency management officials said they expect the aftermath to continue causing problems with swollen lakes and rivers, along with record rainfall.

"It's not over. We've got a long way to go," said Brian Koon, the director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management. "We'll be dealing with flooding for the next week."

Several of the state's rivers in the north reached historic levels, Koon said. The Sopchoppy River reached its peak Wednesday at 36.1 feet. Before the storm, it was 8 feet.

Don Shemwell was in his summer home along the river. He had not left since Sunday because the only road leading to it was under more than 1 foot of water. At one point, the water surrounded his house, but it never actually entered the home.

"I was convinced we were going to lose everything," Shemwell said. "There's a lady who has lived her for 34 years, and she's never seen anything close to this. I mean, how often does some place get 30 inches of rain in 48 hours."

More than 200 people stayed in shelters across the state Tuesday evening.

Koon's department and FEMA will begin the formal damage assessment process on Friday. There was no immediate cost estimate for the damage.

The storm dumped about 10 inches of rain on Tampa and nearby more than 15 inches on the small city of Brooksville. Cities in the state's north fared worse: In Wakulla County ? home to Crawfordville ? 26 inches of rain fell over a 72-hour period, according to the National Weather Service.

Authorities on Wednesday confirmed another storm-related death near St. Petersburg.

Armando Perez, 71, was found dead in flood waters outside of his Indian Rocks Beach home, the Pinellas County sheriff's office said. Perez had a heart attack and officials said he likely couldn't out of the flood to get help.

Over the weekend, a woman died in a tornado in Florida and a man disappeared in the rough surf off the coast of Alabama.

In the Tampa Bay area, clouds gave way to spotty sunshine Wednesday and the water that had flooded some roads began to evaporate. City workers in Tampa carted felled trees and raked debris off Bayshore Boulevard, a 4.5-mile stretch that hugs Tampa Bay. It had been largely underwater and closed for days.

The Salvation Army handed out 1,000 personal hygiene kits to residents in three counties and would bring a mobile shower unit to people displaced by the floods in the Lake City area.

Along the state's beach communities, other worries emerged.

In Manatee County, nearly 200 endangered sea turtles lost their nests, while in Pinellas County, entire colonies of nesting seabirds were wiped out.

"I've never seen anything this bad here in this area," said Barb Walker of the Clearwater Audubon Society.

Walker added that some eagle nests were also destroyed and more than a dozen baby deer were separated from their mothers during the storm ? but most of the babies were reunited with their herds.

There is some hope for the sea turtle population, said Suzi Fox, the director of Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch and Shorebird Monitoring.

Although she estimated that some 180 nests in the county were destroyed, she saw 11 new nests on Wednesday morning. The turtles have six weeks of nesting season left.

"It's a gorgeous day. The waves have died down, the sun is out and the beach is flat," she said. "We have 11 nests laid on our beach as of last night and we're so excited. That's very encouraging."

Retirement is Work: #287: Relatively Speaking

My sister-in-law Toni will be returning home next week and we?ll be sorry to see her go.

She is a pitch-in-and-help-out sort of guest, and that is just what she has done for the past month. She has extended our menu options (Bruce won?t eat fish? Too bad!), put together my new composter, and helped plan a 70th birthday surprise for You-Know-Who.? When I acquired 72 large print books at a library book sale, Toni helped to re-label them and today she is going to the retirement home with me to integrate these new items into the collection.?

Toni, don?t leave!? Alberta family and friends?can get along without you for a little longer!

W

hen she has visited in the past, I was working and I missed out on the day-to-day hanging around that is always a pleasant part of a long visit.? But this time we have had a very leisurely time together while still enjoying the usual expeditions to Toronto and other destinations in Southern Ontario.? And I keep thinking of other places to go and more things to do.
She?s just going to have to come back again soon. She?ll be able to see if I?m still in love with the rolling compost bin.? She may even hope that I have learned to embrace baking soda as an all-purpose cleaning product.? (Like her older?brother, Toni is a whiz at kitchen clean-up.? A bit of a slacker, I am in awe of their speed and efficiency, but I recognize that they were both whipped into shape by that domestic goddess, Dorothy Ryan.? I thought the world of my mother-in-law, so having Toni here reminds me in the nicest way of Dorothy and her many kindnesses.)
And Toni is?only one of Bruce's siblings.??For someone from a small family,?marrying a?guy with four exceptional?sisters and brothers?has been unexpectedly wonderful. ?Too bad they all live out West.
But retirement does mean more opportunities to? visit family, and that is what Bruce and I will do in August when we head for Edmonton, Penticton and Vancouver.? We are pitch-in-and-help-out sorts of guests, too, so the Ryan relatives need to think of a few jobs we can tackle for them.?

Too bad Toni?s own composter is already assembed....??

Establishing credit as a youngin'? | Wall Street Oasis

I don't understand how hard it is to own a credit card and use it responsibly. It honestly BLOWS my mind that people think they can charge things to the card and not be able to pay for it in full by the end of the month. Unless you fall into hard times and HAVE to pay for something urgent, like medical bills or whatnot, there simply is no fucking excuse to have shitty credit and credit card debt.

I opened a credit card when I was a freshman in college in 2007 and paid it off FULLY each and every single month. It's just common fucking sense that you can't spend more than what you have/make.

I almost never ever carry cash and use my credit card for all my purchases whenever possible, which is pretty much everything I ever buy. I have excellent credit (750+) and my credit limits are pretty damn high.

When I hear my friends say they're scared to use one and only use debit cards, I just don't understand how they can rationalize this. These are smart kids too.

Fucking get a credit card, use it, and pay it off in FULL every month. How hard is that?!

I don't care how smart you are, how much money you make, or anything. If you can't handle a credit card responsibly, you are fucking retarded. It's not rocket science.

There is absolutely no freaking way I can fuck myself by charging so much to my credit card to extend a lifestyle that would crush me were I to lose my job because I live below my means, have saved up a good chunk of change, and USE MY CREDIT CARD RESPONSIBLY!

OP: get a Visa/Mastercard and use it for necessary purchases and pay it off in full every single month. Once you graduate and land a job, get an Amex. Those things are fucking amazing when it comes to purchase protection, warranty extensions, fraud protection, everything!

Because of this goddamn recession and the credit crunch, it's going to be so much more advantageous and important to have 'EXCELLENT' credit. Start early, aka, NOW.

{Our Adoption} The Training Begins - House of Rose

I will be sharing some posts on our adoption that I have been writing over the past 6 months. This post was written on March 7, 2012.

We had our first class of adoption training today {March 7, 2012}. It wasn?t really a class?it was more like a meeting since there were only 3 of us there?me, J, and the adoption counselor.

We are required to have 12 hours of in-home training for our home study plus 2 additional hours of online training.

Speaking of home study we learned today that we should finish it up within the next 3-4 months at the most. I didn?t even know what home study meant until recently, but it is basically a written book of your entire life. It is something that your adoption agency will use to send to the country you are adopting from to help place you with a child.

And when I say it?s a written book of your life?I mean they want to know everything about every member of your family?including how many freckles you have on your face.

Ok, maybe not that detailed, but pretty darn close.

So far for the beginning stages of the home study we had to turn in:

  • Up-to-date physicals on everyone in the family, including TB & HIV tests for my husband and I
  • The initial adoption application, which was roughly 4 pages of personal information and questions
  • 5 references
  • Fingerprints (adults only)
  • Information on residency in any state, other than IL, in the past 5 years
  • Floor plan of our home (with room measurements)
  • Proof of adequate income (tax return)
  • Copy of birth certificates for each member of the family
  • Copy of marriage license
  • Copy of pet inoculations
  • Copy of driver?s license and insurance card
  • Copy of medical insurance card/policy

Not bad so far. Ha!

From what I have been told this is JUST the beginning of the paperwork saga though. Did I mention that the agency that is doing our home study is not the actual adoption agency?

Oh yea.

Since our actual adoption agency is out of state, we are required to have an in-state agency do our home study. It seems so confusing.

And really?it is. I think it took me a good 4 weeks to fully understand the difference.

Lutheran Social Services is the company that is doing our Illinois home study and Hope Adoption Agency in Minnesota is the actual adoption agency that will work with the international country to help place us with a child.

Clear as mud?

Psssst.

Anyway, both companies have their OWN set of paperwork, their OWN set of applications, and {even better} their OWN set of fees. :)

We haven?t even applied to the actual adoption agency yet or filled out the application. Right now I am just working on trying to get our home study completed with Lutheran Social Services because we can not technically send an application to adopt ANY child until a home study is done.

Back to our training. The first set of training was a 3 hour session. Not to mention we also had to write our first BIG check today. The initial application with LSSI (Lutheran Social Services) was only $250. But, the actual home study fee was due today and I wrote a check for $2,250.

This is real.

As in?we REALLY will be adding to this chaos.

At least that?s what writing a check that big said to me.

Some of the things we went over in the first training had to do with ?expectations of adoption?. ?When adopting internationally, no matter which country, you will be getting a child that in some shape or form has been traumatized. Whether it be that the child was abused or neglected?they will have some form of trauma that they have dealt with in their life. Even a 1-2 year old.

It?s important to realize that our future child will be grieving the loss of their ?old? life. Even though we know that we will be able to provide this child with a much better life than living in an orphanage or foster care, it is still important to remember that we will be pulling this child from everything that is familiar to them.

Can you imagine being an infant or a toddler and being placed with 2 unfamiliar people that you have never seen before? ?Not to mention that this child will have to LEAVE the country they live in with these 2 unfamiliar people. I can not imagine how scary that would be for a child. It?s probably the one thing about the adoption process that scares me the most.

Will this child bond with me? Will they accept us as parents? Will they adjust to life in a new country with a family that doesn?t even speak the same language? ?Will they scream bloody murder when we take them from the arms of the orphanage workers?

It will break my heart.

But one thing I am certain of, God is leading us down this path for a reason. He?s creating his own story for our lives and although it?s not exactly how I thought our story would be written, it?s the way He sees fit and I?m ready to continue down His path even if it means I?ll be out of my comfort zone as a parent.

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28

Low vitamin D levels linked to weight gain in some older women

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? Older women with insufficient levels of vitamin D gained more weight than those with sufficient levels of the vitamin, according to a new study funded by the National Institutes of Health and published online June 25 in the Journal of Women's Health. The study of more than 4,600 women ages 65 and older found that over nearly five years, those with insufficient levels of vitamin D in their blood gained about two pounds more than those with adequate levels of the vitamin.

"This is one of the first studies to show that women with low levels of vitamin D gain more weight, and although it was only two pounds, over time that can add up," said study author Erin LeBlanc, MD, an endocrinologist and researcher at the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research in Portland, Ore. "Nearly 80 percent of women in our study had insufficient levels of vitamin D. A primary source of this important vitamin is sunlight, and as modern societies move indoors, continuous vitamin D insufficiency may be contributing to chronic weight gain."

Vitamin D was in the news recently when a panel of primary care experts -- the US Preventive Services Task Force -- said healthy postmenopausal women may need higher doses of the vitamin to prevent fractures, and that there isn't enough evidence to recommend the supplements for younger people. Other expert groups, including the Endocrine Society, have a different take, saying many adults do need vitamin D supplements to keep their bones healthy. 1

"Our study only shows an association between insufficient levels of vitamin D and weight gain, we would need to do more studies before recommending the supplements to keep people from gaining weight," Dr. LeBlanc said. "Since there are so many conflicting recommendations about taking vitamin D for any reason, it's best if patients get advice from their own health care provider."

She points out that this study was conducted among older women who, for the most part, were not trying to lose weight -- though some of them did so as a natural result of aging. About 60 percent of the 4,659 women in the study remained at a stable weight (within 5 percent of their starting weight) over the 4.5-year study period, 27 percent lost more than 5 percent of their body weight, and 12 percent gained more than 5 percent of their body weight.

Most women in the study (78 percent) had less than 30 nanograms per millimeter (ng/ml) of vitamin D in their blood -- the level defined as sufficient by the Endocrine Society panel of experts who set clinical guidelines on vitamin D deficiency (pdf). These women had higher baseline weight to begin with: 148.6 pounds, compared with 141.6 pounds for women whose vitamin D levels were 30 ng/ml or above. Insufficient levels had no association with weight changes in the entire group of women, or in the group that lost weight. But in the group of 571 women who gained weight, those with insufficient vitamin D levels gained more -- 18.5 pounds over five years -- than women who had sufficient vitamin D. The latter group gained 16.4 pounds over the same period.

This study is part of a larger project called the Study of Osteoporotic Fractures that has been ongoing for more than two decades. During 1986-88, SOF enrolled nearly 10,000 women ages 65 and older and tracked their medical history through office and home visits, mailed surveys and telephone calls. The women are from Baltimore, Minneapolis, Portland, Ore. and the Monongahela Valley near Pittsburgh. The SOF study is supported by grants from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases and the National Institute on Aging.

Cancer survivor allowed topless swimming at public pools

Unlike other women, 47-year-old Jodi Jaecks can now swim topless in Seattle?s public pools, thanks to a narrow exception granted by the Seattle Parks & Recreation.

Jaecks, a woman who survived a double mastectomy, was at first denied consent earlier this year to swim topless by personnel at Seattle's Medgar Evers pool.

But, Jaecks argued that she doctors had removed both of her breasts last year to treat cancer, and that wearing a bathing suit covering her chest caused her intense pain.

After winning approval to swim topless in public swimming pools, Jaecks said she would not opt for reconstructive surgery to have breasts.

Speaking on the topic, she said, "I don't see a need to fake having breasts. My ultimate goal is to change policy at beaches and pools, to increase people's awareness of cancer and the realities of the human condition.?

She also revealed that she detected the disease in a self breast examination. She said when she detected a lump in her right breast; she was felt like it was cancer. A diagnosis confirmed the disease.

Jaecks finished chemotherapy in November last year and is now completely cancer-free.

Mexico got wrong man in high-profile drug arrest

A man accused of being a cocaine trafficker and the son of Mexico's most wanted drug lord Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman is an automobile dealer swept up in a case of mistaken identity, Mexico's attorney general's office confirmed late Friday.

Mexican marines seized the suspect on Thursday outside Guadalajara and flew him to Mexico City, where they paraded him in front of the media and identified him as Jesus Alfredo Guzman, alias "El Gordo" or "The Fat One."

They said they found him with an arsenal of rifles, pistols and grenades and about $160,000 in cash.

But lawyer Veronica Guerrero told a news conference that her client's real name is Felix Beltran and that he is an innocent car dealer.

Mexico's attorney general's office confirmed later that several identity tests reveal the man was indeed Leon and not the drug trafficker, Telemundo reported.

"This is a case of total confusion over people," said Guerrero, who was accompanied by a woman who said she is the suspect's mother.

Mexico's attorney general's office confirmed late Friday that several identity tests reveal the man was indeed Leon and not the drug trafficker.

Thursday's arrest won praise from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, which has sought Jesus Alfredo Guzman since he was indicted for cocaine trafficking in 2009.

His father, Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman, faces dozens of charges of racketeering and drug smuggling in U.S. courts. There is a $5 million reward for his capture.

The arrest came just over a week before Mexicans vote for a leader to replace President Felipe Calderon.

Brutal clashes between drug cartels and Mexican authorities have killed more than 55,000 people since Calderon launched a crackdown on the gangs in late 2006.

The candidate of Calderon's National Action Party, Josefina Vazquez Mota, is in third place, partly because of public dissatisfaction over the drug war.

On Thursday Vazquez Mota congratulated the marines on the arrest.

Enrique Pena Nieto, candidate for the opposition Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, has a double-digit lead in most polls.

Significant sea-level rise in a two-degree warming world

ScienceDaily (June 24, 2012) ? Sea levels around the world can be expected to rise by several metres in coming centuries, if global warming carries on. Even if global warming is limited to 2 degrees Celsius, global-mean sea level could continue to rise, reaching between 1.5 and 4 metres above present-day levels by the year 2300, with the best estimate being at 2.7 metres, according to a study just published in Nature Climate Change. However, emissions reductions that allow warming to drop below 1.5 degrees Celsius could limit the rise strongly.

The study is the first to give a comprehensive projection for this long perspective, based on observed sea-level rise over the past millennium, as well as on scenarios for future greenhouse-gas emissions.

"Sea-level rise is a hard to quantify, yet critical risk of climate change," says Michiel Schaeffer of Climate Analytics and Wageningen University, lead author of the study. "Due to the long time it takes for the world's ice and water masses to react to global warming, our emissions today determine sea levels for centuries to come."

Limiting global warming could considerably reduce sea-level rise

While the findings suggest that even at relatively low levels of global warming the world will have to face significant sea-level rise, the study also demonstrates the benefits of reducing greenhouse-gas emissions. Limiting global warming to below 1.5 degrees Celsius and subsequent temperature reductions could halve sea-level rise by 2300, compared to a 2-degree scenario. If temperatures are allowed to rise by 3 degrees, the expected sea-level rise could range between 2 and 5 metres, with the best estimate being at 3.5 metres.

The potential impacts are significant. "As an example, for New York City it has been shown that one metre of sea level rise could raise the frequency of severe flooding from once per century to once every three years," says Stefan Rahmstorf of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, co-author of the study. Also, low lying deltaic countries like Bangladesh and many small island states are likely to be severely affected.

Sea-level rise rate defines the time for adaptation

The scientists further assessed the rate of sea-level rise. The warmer the climate gets, the faster the sea level climbs. "Coastal communities have less time to adapt if sea-levels rise faster," Rahmstorf says

"In our projections, a constant level of 2-degree warming will sustain rates of sea-level rise twice as high as observed today, until well after 2300," adds Schaeffer, "but much deeper emission reductions seem able to achieve a strong slow-down, or even a stabilization of sea level over that time frame."

Building on data from the past

Previous multi-century projections of sea-level rise reviewed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) were limited to the rise caused by thermal expansion of the ocean water as it heats up, which the IPCC found could reach up to a metre by 2300. However, this estimate did not include the potentially larger effect of melting ice, and research exploring this effect has considerably advanced in the last few years. The new study is using a complementary approach, called semi-empirical, that is based on using the connection between observed temperature and sea level during past centuries in order to estimate sea-level rise for scenarios of future global warming.

"Of course it remains open how far the close link between temperature and global sea level found for the past will carry on into the future," says Rahmstorf. "Despite the uncertainty we still have about future sea level, from a risk perspective our approach provides at least plausible, and relevant, estimates."

Masing-masing dipusatkan di SMA N 1 Muntilan, SMA N 7 Purworejo, MAN 1 Kulonprogo, SMAN 1 Ngaglik Sleman, Klaten, SMK 1 Kasihan Bantul, SMK Jetis Yogyakarta dan MAN Wonosari Gunungkidul.

Super-social spaceman shares his story

NASA via Twitpic

NASA astronaut Ron Garan looks into the camera from outside the International Space Station in July 2011. "Knocking on the door to come back in #FromSpace after yesterday's spacewalk," Garan wrote on Twitpic.

By Alan Boyle

You might think it's cool enough that NASA astronaut Ron Garan has spent months aboard the International Space Station, but he?s become even better-known as a social-media maven. This month he passed the 2 million mark for Google+ circles, putting him at No. 21 on the Google+ Top 100. His Fragile Oasis postings are a highlight on the Web, Facebook and Twitter. His "Ask Me Anything" exchange with Reddit users went so well he's thinking of doing it again.

So what's the secret to his success? It's really not a secret at all: He?s got a good story to share, about the beauty and fragility of planet Earth.

The 50-year-old New York native is a former Air Force fighter pilot who has degrees in business economics and aerospace engineering. He joined the astronaut corps in 2000, and his training for spaceflight included a turn as an "aquanaut" for NASA's NEEMO underwater research mission in 2006. Garan has been up in space twice ? in 2008, on the shuttle Discovery to help deliver Japan's Kibo lab to the International Space Station; and just last year for a nearly six-month tour of duty on the station.

Garan says another stint on the space station is "always a possibility, down the road." But right now, he's focusing on NASA's Open Government Initiative, which aims to build stronger collaborative ties between government, industry and the general public. That means social engagement isn't just something he does in his spare time. It's part of his job.

During a recent interview, Garan talked about how he became a super-social spaceman, and what he's learned from the adventure. Here are some edited excerpts of the Q&A:

Cosmic Log: When you come into contact with the public, what do you find they?re most curious about?

Garan:?"Well, what they?re most curious about is the basic question of what life is like, living in space. It really is a marvelous experience. It?s very interesting in a lot of respects ? and probably the greatest part about it is that it gave me an incredible sense of appreciation for what we have here on our planet. Everything from just simple things that define the beauty of life on our planet ? the breeze in your face, and the smell of flowers, watching a flock of birds and a million other things. After you?re up there for a while, those are things that?you really start to miss.

"I had the opportunity to have a short-duration flight on the space shuttle Discovery back in 2008, during which I was up there for two weeks, and then a long-term one where I was up for five and a half months. And it?s a very different experience. You have the same views, you have the same environment that you live in. But being able to see the earth, day in and day out, and watch the earth change ... and to really start to miss some of the things that I took for granted, that really gives you that appreciation."

Ron Garan / NASA

A fish-eye view of the International Space Station, captured by Ron Garan last July, features the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer in the foreground. A Russian Progress cargo ship and a Soyuz crew capsule are docked on the left end of the station. The structure extending to the left of the AMS is a thermal radiator. One of the station's gold-colored solar arrays is visible in the background. And off to the right, the shuttle Atlantis is docked to the station's Tranquility module.

Q: So how did the Fragile Oasis website enter into the mix?

A:?"That came out of my shuttle mission in 2008. I had a little bit of frustration. I imagine it?s like when you go to the Grand Canyon, and you?re there by yourself, and you sit there at the rim of the Grand Canyon and you?re looking out over this amazing thing. And imagine that very, very few people have been able to have that experience. For me, at least, that would be frustrating, and the experience would not be as rich as it would be if I had the opportunity to share that with people. So I was frustrated during my shuttle mission that I couldn?t share the experience.

"When I got assigned to my long-duration mission, there?s two and a half years of training, and during that two and a half years, I really brainstormed how I could do that. We came up with Fragile Oasis, not just to have it as a website where we could tell stories about space, but the goal was always to provide a platform for people to follow along on the mission, not as spectators but as fellow crew members. To have an interactive way to do it.

"We had some significant technical challenges in getting that thing off the ground, and it?s still a work in progress. It doesn?t have a lot of the interactive features that we wanted it to have, but we?re working on it. When I launched to the International Space Station, and I had the five and a half months up there, I really was very thankful that I had this tool, this platform, to be able to communicate. And in the meantime, we had the exponential increase in the popularity of social media tools.

"First I did Facebook, but I didn't see that as a public outreach tool. I saw that as a way to connect with old friends, and I was just using it on a personal basis. On the other hand, I started Twitter for one reason: I saw it as a way to do education outreach. I could say, I?m learning about this experiment we?re going to be doing in space, and I?d put a link on there to the experiment's website and the science behind it. I saw that as a very powerful way to do outreach. I now see the benefits of outreach in other platforms as well, including Facebook and obviously Google+. In the case of Google+, I see a very robust mechanism to share the space program and the experience of living in space with a lot of interactive features on that platform."

Q: With all your experience in social media, do you find that you favor one tool over the other? From your comments, it sounds as if you?re seeing some differentiation in how those different tools can be used. Particularly with Google+, you just recently passed the 2-million-follower mark. That must be one of the big successes for your efforts.

A:?"Well, I think all the platforms offer slightly different tools to tell the story. I think they all fit together really well, actually. So it?s not a 'one-platform' type of message. We want to reach the broadest audience we can, because the excitement of spaceflight is global. It?s for all humanity. So the more tools we can use to tell that story, and the more people we can get involved with the story, the better off the whole message will be."

Q: Did you have to do a selling job with NASA to do the sorts of things you?re doing?

A:?"It took a while to catch on, but it?s catching on now across the board. We realize the benefit of social media. I?m on some social-media committees now, on some working groups to help not only crew members and astronauts, but also thousands of other people who work in the space program. They have a very compelling story as well. We?re trying to find the best way to get that story out. And what we?re finding is that just letting people tell their story in the way they want to tell it is the best way to do it.

"Obviously, there have to be guidelines. But the more leeway we can give people in the space program to tell their story, the richer the experience will be, both for the people who are reading it and for the people who are doing it. That?s one of the cardinal rules here, to give people as much leeway as we possibly can."

Q: Are there any guidelines or favorites that you want to pass along to people who want to be closer in touch with the space adventure?

A:?"Oh, yeah. There are tons and tons of people. Most of the astronauts who fly in space right now have Twitter accounts. They?re all on there. There?s also @NASA_Astronauts, where we try to retweet, as best we can, everything from all the astronauts. There?s @NASA, the official Twitter account. There?s the Facebook version, and soon the Google+ version of all these as well. There?s commercial spaceflight: @SpaceX has a social media presence. There are people outside the space agency who are involved in telling the story as well, such as @YurisNight and #spacetweeps.

"What we?re finding through this is that it?s not just the official word from NASA, the European Space Agency and the Japanese space agency. There are citizen scientists and all these other groups that have formed around the idea of space exploration, and they really do a great job of telling the story as well. It?s obvious that there?s a lot of passion and heart and soul that?s put into this."

Q: Is there something about the space story that particularly resonates with social media?

A:?"I think it?s because it?s a human endeavor, and throughout the 50 years of human spaceflight, it?s always been a select few people who have gotten to fly in space, and we?ve relied on them to come back and tell us what it was like. Now, through technology and through these new platforms, we can bring people along with us on the missions and have them experience this is real time. You can see example after example of this.

"An easy example is, if one of us sends out a tweet with a picture, let?s say, and we misidentify the geographic location, we?re going to find out about that pretty fast. That happened to me on my mission, and I thanked the person who brought that to my attention. I started sending pictures to that person first, to make sure I got it right. We don?t have a lot of time up there, and all the pictures and all the social media that we do is in our free time. So to have people on the ground, crowdsourcing or open-sourcing or however you want to put it, that really empowers us to do more. It makes communication much more effective."

Q: Have you ever thought if it would be possible to boil down the glory of space down into one tweet? Is there any elevator talk you?ve thought about giving in 140 characters, about what it?s like to fly in space?

A:?"You?d need at least 147 characters to do that ... no. I know I couldn?t do it. That would be a pretty remarkable feat."

Q: What?s the one thing that you?d like people to know about spaceflight.

A:?"In 140 characters?"

Q: Not 140 characters, but what?s the one biggest message that you think the space experience provides for people on Earth?

A:?"Well,? to go back to the reason we started Fragile Oasis: The really compelling reason is that we wanted to use this perspective we have on the planet to inspire people to go out and make a difference, and make the world a better planet. The one gift that I think we get when we fly in space is this perspective.

"You don't necessarily have to be in space to get this perspective, but being in space really reinforces it: You see how fragile the planet is. You see how beautiful it is, how peaceful it looks. Then you realize that life is not as beautiful for everybody on the planet as it looks from space. That's a very compelling thing to experience, and hopefully it serves as a call to action, to not accept the status quo and make life on the planet as beautiful as it looks. That's the No. 1 thing that I want to get across."

NASA

The International Space Station looks like little more than a speck with solar panels in this picture, which was taken from the shuttle Atlantis during its approach on July 10. A first-quarter moon shines on the right side of the frame.

Where in the Cosmos
Garan and his colleagues at Fragile Oasis offer a cornucopia of outer-space imagery and blog postings, including this picture of the International Space Station and the moon, as seen from the shuttle Atlantis during its approach for docking last July. The photo served as today's quiz picture in the "Where in the Cosmos" contest, presented weekly on the Cosmic Log Facebook page.

Len Whitney's comment was my favorite: "I believe it's a TIE fighter ... but those are short-range fighters, we're too far out in space ... Must have taken off from that moon ... Wait a second ... that's no moon!!!! It's a space station!"

For figuring out so quickly that the picture showed a moon and a space station, I'm sending 3-D glasses to Facebook followers Matt Jaworski and Lawrence Johnson. I'm also reserving a pair for Whitney. To make sure you're in on next week's contest, click the "like" button on the Cosmic Log Facebook page and join the alliance. It's not a trap!

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A Pentagon review recommends ridding the combat pay system of inequities that have allowed officers thousands of miles from battle to get better benefits proportionally than troops on the front lines in Afghanistan.

The recommendations in a review released Thursday are likely to anger service members. But the director of the review said they're aimed at paying more to troops who are in the gravest danger and giving the best tax benefits to those who are paid the least.

Military officers who are not near the fight can sometimes get more in combat pay and tax benefits than troops who are getting shot at on the front lines, said Thomas Bush, who directed the review. He said the main goal was to make combat pay more equitable.

The report doesn't recommend any specific rates of combat pay or say that certain troops should get less. But, Bush said, "we suggest there be some meaningful distinction" between troops who are getting shot at and those who are simply deployed to one of many countries designated as combat zones.

Under the military's current system, there are two types of combat pay. One, called "hostile fire pay," gives troops $225 a month if they are in an area where they could be exposed to enemy fire.

The second, called "imminent danger pay," gives up to $225 per month to those who are in a combat zone, and it is pro-rated at $7.50 a day, based on how long they are there.

Bush said the report recommends that hostile fire pay be more than the danger pay and that there be levels of imminent danger pay based on where service members are. Currently they can get the danger pay for being in more than two dozen places, including Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kyrgyzstan, the Philippines and Jordan ? as well as in Afghanistan, Yemen and Somalia.

"We want to target compensation to people who are at the greatest risk," Bush said.

In December 2009, President Barack Obama directed the department to examine four specific areas: combat pay, benefits and pay for the National Guard and Reserve, compensation for wounded service members and their survivors and pay incentives for key defense jobs, such as drone operators, special operations forces, linguists and mental health professionals.

Under the current system, service members up to the top level senior enlisted rank do not pay taxes on their pay when they are in a war zone. Higher level officers would not pay taxes on the portion of their salary equal to the top senior enlisted members' amount.

When they go to a combat zone, the taxes are no longer taken out of their pay, giving them an automatic raise for their deployment time.

The proposed change would make the combat pay a refundable tax credit that service members would file for at the end of the tax year.

But Bush said that because of the federal tax code, the benefits for higher level officers clearly outweigh the tax benefits for low-ranking troops, because much of their pay would already be at a very low tax rate.

The panel was struck by that disparity, Bush said, adding that a senior officer could get as much as a $15,000 tax benefit, while an Army private might get a $1,000 tax benefit.

And yet, the private serving at a combat outpost in Kandahar or Khost in Afghanistan has a much higher chance of getting killed or injured than a senior officer serving in a headquarters unit or in Bahrain.

Congress members have been loath to do anything that appears to cut combat pay and have often tried to increase pay raises for the military. Bush acknowledged that it's not clear how open they would be to the changes recommended by the report, but he said he hoped lawmakers would be open to making the system more equal.

NBC Chicago

By NBCChicago.com

A BMW made its own parking spot Thursday morning when it landed on top of two other cars.

The SUV was on the third floor of a parking garage around 11:15 a.m. at 20 E. Randolph St. when the driver suddenly hit the gas, said Vicky Baftiri, who witnessed the incident.

The car flew through some wires and launched into the air, landing on top of a Jaguar and Mercedes.

"I was pulling out from my parking spot," Baftiri said. "If those cars weren't there he would've hit me."

The driver looked thoroughly shaken and Baftiri yelled to call 911. Chicago Police and fire officials arrived, and no one appeared injured.

The crash happened on the same floor as an Enterprise Rent-A-Car. A clerk at the kiosk told Baftiri the man was returning the rented vehicle.
