McIlroy recovers from rugged start for 71

DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) ? Rory McIlroy went from the bunker to the water, walked across the pond to the drop area, then hit into another bunker. When he was done making a mess of the 12th hole at Muirfield Village, he had a quadruple-bogey 7 on his card and wondered if this was going to be another short week.

Thanks to the next 15 holes he played Thursday at the Memorial, he felt he was headed in the right direction.

McIlroy and Tiger Woods both overcame one bad hole to break par in the opening round on a tough, firm course that was just the way tournament founder Jack Nicklaus likes it.

Woods chopped his way to a double bogey on No. 18 in the middle of his round, but he birdied three of the par 5s and was solid for most of the sunny, pleasant day for a 2-under 70. McIlroy one-putted nine greens and chipped in for eagle on the par-5 fifth. A birdie on his last hole gave him a 71.

"It wasn't the start I wanted to get off to, being 4 over through three holes, especially after the last few weeks," McIlroy said. "I was just like, 'Here we go again.' But I hung in there well, and proud of myself for the way I just fought back. To finish the round under par, I thought was a really good effort."

The big winner among early starters was Muirfield Village. Under dry conditions, and with a few perilous pins, players were protecting par when they got the least bit out of position. Blake Adams, Andres Romero, Aaron Baddeley and Rory Sabbatini were atop the leaderboard at 69.

"You have to find the right parts of the green or else you're in for a long day," Adams said.

Woods and McIlroy both have hit a bad patch coming into the Memorial. Woods tied for 40th at the Masters and The Players Championship, and in between missed the cut at Quail Hollow for the worst three-tournament stretch of his PGA Tour career. McIlroy is coming off missed cuts at The Players and the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, which cost him the No. 1 ranking.

McIlroy conceded that he had not prepared properly for Wentworth, and vowed to get his game on track. He worked throughout the weekend on the range and in the gym, spent six hours practicing when he arrived at Muirfield, and then watched it all fall apart early in his round.

His long approach into the par-5 11th had too much movement to the left and tumbled into the water, and the 23-year-old from Northern Ireland had to scramble for par. And then came the par-3 12th, a hole that gave up only three birdies in the morning.

McIlroy caught a horrible lie in the back, his ball on a downward slope that made it difficult to stop on a green running away from him. It raced across the green, down the bank and into the water. Going to the drop area ? the forward tee for members ? he went into the front bunker, and then blasted out to 10 feet and took two putts for his 7.

"I had such an awkward stance, it was just hard to execute the shot," McIlroy said of the first bunker shot. "I flew it maybe a few yards too far and it went in the water on the other side."

How he managed to stay patient might have been his finest feat of the day, and his putter certainly saved him. McIlroy twice made 8-foot par putts, avoid a three-putt on the 18th with a 6-foot par putt and sprinkled in enough birdies to stay in the game.

The turning point came at the par-5 fifth, when he hooked his tee shot for the gallery. He cursed through clenched teeth, and holding his driver behind him, whacked himself in the back with the grip a couple of times. From the left rough, he played an aggressive fairway metal, low and hot and dead straight, avoiding the water down the left side of the fairway. The ball came up about 15 yards short of the green, and he pitched in for eagle.

"I see enough good shots out there to give me encouragement," McIlroy said, one eye toward his title defense in the U.S. Open in two weeks. "There's still a few that I don't like, but as long as the good ones are in there, then you see the positives."

He played with Luke Donald, who won at Wentworth to reclaim No. 1 in a back-and-forth battle with McIlroy. Donald also was saved by his putter in a scrappy round. He hit into the water off the tee at the 18th for double bogey, but made three tough pars from the bunkers on the 16th, 17th and first holes. Two of the par putts were from 10 feet, the other from 18 feet.

"Hopefully, that's my loose round out of the way," Donald said after a 71.

Woods has been struggling on the par 5s, though that wasn't a problem. The only one where he didn't make birdie came at the 11th, when he drilled a beautiful second shot that went just over the back of the green. He chipped weakly to about 8 feet and missed the putt.

The only big miscue for the four-time Memorial champion was on the 18th, when he blocked a 5-wood off the tee into the bunker, hooked that into a nasty patch of rough to the left of the green, came up short and into a bunker and couldn't get up-and-down.

"I didn't do anything great and I didn't do anything poorly," Wood said. "I was just very consistent. And I think with the golf course being the way it's set up, you just have to be that way. ... Over the next three days, hopefully I can play as well as I did today."

Column: Winning's grand, entertaining is enough - NewsOn6.com ...

CHICAGO (AP) - The Cubs skulked back into town with their tails between their legs and plenty to answer for.

Then Monday dawned hot and hazy and by mid-afternoon, the sun was shining, the cold beer was flowing, the wind was blowing out and a fleet of baseballs hitched a ride on the jetstream over the walls at Wrigley Field. By the time the accounting was done, the Cubs had half of the eight home runs and an 11-7 win over the equally hapless Padres.

Throw in a pre-game flight by the eagle Challenger and a seventh-inning rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" by actor Brian Dennehy - in town starring in the play, "The Iceman Cometh" - and it was entertaining enough to send fans out the door wondering where the party was relocating and exactly what they were so upset about in the first place.

Cubs manager Dale Sveum wasn't about to remind them.

"Let's not kid yourself. You lose 12 in a row, you finally win. It's a big relief," he said afterward

Just don't count on celebrating for long. Even in bad years, the Cubs usually don't swoon until June. This year they couldn't even make it to Memorial Day. At this rate, they could be mathematically eliminated by the Fourth of July.

The last six of the Cubs' dozen straight losses came during a seven-day road trip at NL Central rivals Houston and Pittsburgh, two of the only half-dozen or so teams Chicago actually has a chance against. It was like being told to bring back dinner and spending all night at the bar instead, then returning empty-handed and praying fans hadn't changed the locks on the gates at Wrigley Field.

"Patience is something a lot of fans don't have," Sveum had said Sunday in Pittsburgh.

Yet he marveled the way Cubs fans had stuck by his team thus far.

"We all understand -- I'm a huge football fan and I don't understand the Oakland Raiders losing every game. That's the way it is."

In Chicago, maybe.

Even so, Theo Epstein wasn't inclined to press his luck. His title with the Cubs is president of baseball operations, but Chicagoans think of Epstein as the boy genius-general manager who ended the Red Sox' decades-long World Series drought and was brought to town to repeat the trick here. Never mind that he preached patience upon his arrival last October and despite his best efforts, still has only two everyday ballplayers - Starlin Castro and David DeJesus - who could start for most clubs, a barely adequate rotation and a mess in the bullpen.

Even Epstein made it sound like he didn't sign on for this.

"I think we're clearly better than this ... on both fronts, short- and long-term, there's work to do," he said at a hastily arranged news conference.

Unfortunately, though beyond "start scrapping and keep grinding for pride," Epstein was short on specifics on how to improve things over the short term.

"Long term," he added, not much more optimistic, "it underscores the magnitude of the job here and sort of how far we need to go to get where we want to be."

At a century and still counting, Cub fans are either the dopiest of most patient bunch in sports. And over the course of all that losing, they've learned to savor the distractions that are often more interesting than anything the team has been able to cobble together on the field. That's why they happily blame black cats, real goats and imaginary scapegoats like Steve Bartman for the ballclub's unending run of futility.

Winning is great, but in these parts entertaining is still good enough.

Last week's brouhaha was over whether Joe Ricketts, the conservative patriarch of TD Ameritrade and the family that owns the Cubs, was really planning to finance a nasty political attack campaign against President Barack Obama - and whether that would make it harder for the Cubs to gain concessions to modify Wrigley Field from the city's staunchly Democratic mayor, Rahm Emanuel, and the city council.

The week before that, it was the nostalgia kicked up by the retirement of one-time pitching phenom Kerry Wood and an essay in The Wall Street Journal calling for the destruction of Wrigley Field, suggesting the aging shrine was actually the reason for all that losing:

"Destroy it. Annihilate it. Collapse it with the sort of charges that put the Sands Hotel out of its misery in Vegas. Implosion or explosion, get rid of it. That pile of quaintness has to go. ... When a house is haunted, you don't put in a new scoreboard, add ivy, get better food or bigger beers_you move!"

Sounding more like a fan than the Cubs left-fielder, Alfonso Soriano considered the option for the briefest of moments.

"Leave this place? No, never," he said after going 3 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs. "You saw how much it was jumping when we got it going. Let's see what can happen now. We just had some tough moments before."

Which is, give or take a few years, is how the Cubs still refer to the last century.

The cons for the app are the fact that certain handy features like the graphs and the ability to view information wireless are limited to iPads. Additionally, there?s a cumbersome feature ? which some might like ? of adding transactions manually as they occur. More preferable would be a refresh button that automatically syncs your information.

Money for iPhone

This app is available for $1.99 in the app store. It supports multiple currencies, various accounts and detailed budgets. The app also allows users to schedule recurring transactions like paycheck deposits and debits for utility bills or other various monthly expenses. The report viewing options include pie charts and progress bars, and users are alerted when they?re approaching or exceed budget limits.

Overall the app is quite helpful for budgeting and personal finance given the detailed tracking it offers. Two faults are the cost and, again, the need to enter transactions manually, which is akin to the old days of checkbook balancing.

iXpenseIt

This app costs a whopping $4.99, but because of the features that?s an easily overlooked point. The app supports multiple currencies and accounts, and sports the standard features like payment alerts, budgeting, a calculator and visual indicators for budgets and related expenses. The app also offers bar charts for expenses and cash flow to better help users track their spending. And because of options like the ability to generate graph reports, store photo receipts, generate expense summaries and track mileage while recording your reimbursement rate, this app is perfect for employees to track their work-related expenses.

The cons are the trap of requiring users to pay for PDF reports at $0.99 each, and the lack of iCloud compatibility for data backup.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Summer television used to mean reruns. This year it's gone to the dogs.

Several new shows star dogs and their owners in need of help. CBS has the lone network show in "Dogs in the City," starring comic, dog trainer and businessman Justin Silver. It's joined by documentaries on PBS and HBO and a series in the works for the Disney Channel, among others.

Each Wednesday at 8 p.m., beginning May 30, Silver will try to help hound and human tackle unsettling problems like joint custody after divorce or dealing with significant others who just moved in.

Is man or mutt usually to blame for problems? It's 50-50, he said, but "a dog's behavior is shaped by the people in its life."

Silver says he won't be the one solving problems, even though he jokes that he speaks dog. Instead he will provide techniques and experiences so owners can fix their own problems.

"It's that old adage: Give a man a fish and you'll fill his belly. Teach him how to fish and he'll never starve. I am teaching you how to fish. But no one learns how to fish perfectly in one hour. It takes constant practice."

If intervention is needed, he will call on his own pit bulls, Chiquita and Pacino. "I use my dogs as much as possible because the thing that influences dogs most is other balanced dogs," he said.

"Dogs in the City" seems to have a lot in common with "The Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan" on the National Geographic Channel and "It's Me or the Dog" with Victoria Stilwell on Animal Planet. "Bad Dog!" is another Animal Planet show, although it uses videotape to capture misbehavior in a test of sorts to see how far an owner's love will stretch.

Documentaries airing in May and June explore the rewards and redemption of shelter dogs. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says between 5 million and 7 million companion animals enter shelters every year and between 3 million and 4 million of them are euthanized.

"Shelter Me," a PBS documentary, is narrated by actress Katherine Heigl and is sponsored by the pet food company co-owned by Ellen DeGeneres.

It follows an animal control officer, adoption workers, female inmates who train rescue dogs, and vets who acquire former shelter dogs.

"'Shelter Me' is about the lives that are changed when shelter pets are given a second chance," Heigl said.

Andrew J. Trotto, an Army veteran from Mission Viejo, was teamed up with Teka, a black Lab rescued from a Wyoming shelter by Freedom Service Dogs in Englewood, Colo.

"If it wasn't for her, I'd be dead right now," Trotto says in the film.

"I was an evil person. I hated you or wanted to kill you," he said, describing the PTSD demons that haunted him. "People say suicide is selfish. But when you are in the zone, you're not thinking about that. The terror in your head drives you insane. She (Teka) will wake me up out of my night terrors."

"Shelter Me" will air across the country in late May and June.

HBO will premiere a documentary called "One Nation Under Dog: Stories of Fear, Loss & Betrayal" on June 18 at 9 p.m.

The film looks at America's obsession with dogs, how far individuals will go for their pets and what it will take for people across the country to treat all dogs humanely.

The 73-minute documentary looks at the odds stacked against shelter dogs, spay and neuter education, puppy mills, dog bite victims and how some owners respond when their dog attacks.

The Disney Channel also has a new dog show in the works for the fall and while it does involve a rescue dog, that's where reality ends.

The live-action, multi-camera series called "Dog With A Blog" and revolves around a dog named Stan (who is really a 4-year-old named Kuma).

In real life, Kuma is a husky, golden retriever and border collie mix who was rescued from a shelter. In the show, he is adopted to tame a pair of feuding stepbrothers. Turns out Stan can read, write and blog.

A year after rare killer tornado, residents on 1 Massachusetts road are on rebound

Four tornadoes touched down in Massachusetts, destroying or damaging 1,400 houses and 78 businesses. Damage to insured property surpassed $200 million. Three people died because of the storm, the state's first tornado deaths in 16 years.

Monson, population 8,500, got a visit from the biggest twister. With 160-mph wind gusts, it touched down downtown before crossing Bethany Road in one of the worst-hit neighborhoods.

The road is still undergoing a facelift. There are five new homes on the street, but empty lots remain in places where no building permits are pending.

Bald patches mar slopes where pine trees once towered. The rumble of trucks and buzz of saws drown out songbirds. New homes mingle with century-old Victorians.

It was a makeover no one wanted. But Bethany Road residents are rising from the rubble.

For many people, the storm brought misery and stress. For Fisk Bacon Jr., it also brought heartache.

He and his 75-year-old wife, Joan, took cover in the basement of their Victorian at 4 Bethany Road when the tornado struck.

Their house suffered damage, but the worst came later.

Bacon's wife of 58 years died the next morning, following a heart attack he believes the tornado brought on after she heard one of their sons lost his nearby home.

"I still can't believe that my wife isn't here," the 82-year-old retired electrician said recently.

Bacon lived through the 1938 hurricane and the 1955 flood on Bethany Road. While he said it won't be the same after 2011, he believes the twister didn't bring only bad.

"It seems like it brought a lot of people back together again," he said.

Neighbors came together to clear debris, make meals and figure out what exactly to do next.

"It's a different-looking Monson, but it's still a beautiful Monson," Town Administrator Gretchen Neggers said. "In many ways, it was even beautiful the day after the tornado because of the way the people came together."

The new bathroom cabinets were on the porch at 11 Bethany Road when the storm came. It blew them away with the rest of Dwight and Debbie Meacham's 1898 Victorian.

The couple had just made their last mortgage payment and were wrapping up a remodel.

But when Dwight made it home after the tornado, the 60-year-old wiring and cable company supervisor called his wife to say it was just a cellar hole with water shooting out of it.

"It's gone, Deb," he told her. "Don't even come here."

Construction on their new home started in October. But remnants from their old home reappeared from time to time as strangers mailed back paperwork that took flight during the twister.

The Meachams don't have plans to mark the storm's anniversary after about two months in their new two-story Cape.

"I'd just like to forget," Dwight said.

At 6 Bethany Road, neighbor Kim Slozak said memories of that day have been barging into her dreams.

Slozak hunkered in a bathtub with the family's kitten, Rex, and their Golden Retriever, Maggie, when she heard the twister's roar.

On one side of the Slozaks' property, twin storage pods rested on a cleared lot. Their longtime neighbor, Diana Robbins, said she was planning a tag sale to sell some of what she salvaged before the demolition of her 1901 Victorian.

From a window at the Slozaks', Robbins looked toward a church that lost its steeple, guessing how many years it would be before the storm-ravaged vista got its green back.

On the other side of the Slozaks' property, Fisk Bacon Jr. descended the steps of his fixed-up home that day to make the half-mile trip to Bethany Roman Catholic Cemetery where the road ends.

Whale meat is carved at the beach and shared among the community along with mythical tales of whales giving up their freedom to nourish the people.

In early April, Roy Nageak, 60, a whaling captain, got off his snowmobile and climbed a high ice ridge four miles offshore in search of a navigable hunting trail. ?Those oil guys can think whatever they want, but we know how harsh this ocean is,? he said. ?They don?t know what they are getting into.?

But the Eskimos have also come to rely on the oil industry. Before onshore drilling began in the 1960s, many North Slope communities lacked running water and relied on kerosene lanterns for light. Residents chopped ice on nearby lakes and transported it by dog sled to preserve their food. There were no high schools or fire stations.

Since the construction of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline in the late 1970s, the North Slope has produced as much as one-fifth of the nation?s oil, and taxes on the industry finance the North Slope Borough government?s $350 million annual budget. Over the past 50 years, nearly all of Alaska?s prosperity has been driven by oil production and crude prices. Residents pay no state income tax, and in fact receive checks ? totaling roughly $5,000 for a family of four last year ? from the Alaska Permanent Fund, a corporation largely financed by oil revenues.

But the Exxon Valdez disaster in 1989 had changed attitudes, especially among villagers. They feared that drilling would disturb the bowhead migration, forcing the whales away from their food and their pursuers dangerously far offshore. They also feared a spill could poison the whales.

The Deepwater Horizon disaster on April 20, 2010, the worst offshore spill in U.S. history, shut down Shell?s drilling plans for the year, but barely slowed its lobbying campaign on the Arctic. In numerous White House meetings even at the height of the gulf crisis, top Shell officials pressed for a decision.

In July, he created by executive order a multiagency task force led by the deputy interior secretary but overseen by Heather Zichal, an environmental adviser to the 2008 Obama campaign, to prod the bureaucracy on Arctic issues, particularly Shell?s drilling plans.

Still, some government officials complained that there remained huge gaps in response plans for a spill and too many unknowns about the effect of drilling on marine animals.

At the urging of regulators, Shell strengthened spill prevention and response plans. It built a containment system for the Arctic modeled on the one that successfully capped the BP well and added ships and equipment to the armada to be in place to capture any spilled oil. The company agreed reluctantly to shorten its Chukchi Sea drilling season by 38 days, to less than three months, to ensure that the area would be ice-free in case of a blowout.

The government strengthened its Arctic research programs to better understand the impact of increased industrial activity in the northern ocean. Those and other concessions seemed to placate officials at the permitting agencies, who were navigating between their regulatory duties and the president?s obvious desire to drill.

Shell?s permits came in a rush. Interior approved exploration in both seas by last December. Response plans were endorsed in February and March of this year. The EPA?s appeals board cleared the final air permits at the end of March ? just as the whaling season got under way. NOAA came through with a marine mammal permit in early May.

?We can?t stop it,? said one senior agency official who had qualms about Arctic drilling but understood the president?s wishes. ?We can only make it less bad.?

Shell is awaiting its final drilling permits from the Interior Department. Two Shell ships are in Seattle, undergoing final modifications and inspections.
