I haven?t always liked board games, but now that I am older and wiser I know it is because my three older brothers always been the pants off me at most any game we played. My dad was about the only one who ?let? me win from time to time.
Now that I have kids we have really gotten into the spirit of board games, I look for games that teach them something no matter how small. Recently, I discovered that with a little coaxing most any board game can be a learning experience for kids.
Very quickly I saw how board games helped both kids learn about taking turns. My youngest was about 3-years-old when we started playing after dinner each night, and he wanted to go first all of the time. We told him if he wanted to play we would rotate who goes first. Took a little while for him to realize we weren?t kidding, but soon enough he would be the one to remind us.
It was about this time that my older child was struggling with sportsmanship. In other words, she was a sore loser. Oh, how she hated to lose. Still isn?t much of a fan, but at least she has some grace when she does lose. Board games were a great foray into the unwritten social rules, be it of board games or games of any sort. When one of us would win we would fuss over them and cheer and dance about. We pretty much ignored any pouting going on and just focused on the person who won. Now, from anywhere in the house, I can always tell when a game is over because I hear loud cheering and laughing all around.
Another big board game appeal in our house was teaching impulse control, especially for my son. He loves to play, but sitting still wasn?t his thing. He would climb on dad, hop around on all fours and roll around the room like a little puppy dog. It was distracting and, frankly, annoying. A new rule soon followed: While we don?t expect you (especially our son, a boy, after all) to sit still as a statue, we do expect you to stay reasonably calm ... unless you win! It was only after my son?s parent-teacher conference that I realized this little rule helped him at circle time, when sitting still for a longer than usually time was expected.
But I think my board game ?ah-ha? moment came when we started playing games like Connect Four and Chess. We hadn?t focused much on the strategy behind winning games in the past, but as the kids got older and they started wondering how mom and dad won so often, we clued them in on it. I took the lead and asked dad, ?How?d ya do that?? and he would explain his move to me. Or I would inquire, ?Why did you put your pawn there?? and watch as the kids lapped up the information on how to win. Soon we had the kids explaining their moves and it wasn?t soon after that we didn?t have to ?let? them win at all.
So play board games for the sheer fun of it all, but also, every once in a while, challenge your kids with questions about why they made a particular move, how they hope to win and if they think they can play better next time. I am secure enough with myself to move past the days of ?letting? my first-grader win and advance to hoping she does win -- and be in awe of how she did it!

LiquidPiston's Hyper-Efficient Engine: Turning the Rotary Inside Out
As automakers augment the reciprocating piston engine with hybrid systems and improved accessories, independent inventors are busily working to make huge improvements to the basic efficiency of the internal combustion engine. Novel designs are popping up at engineering expos everywhere, and the newest comes from?Bloomfield, Conn.-based LiquidPiston. Its X1 engine is a simple machine with just three moving parts and thirteen major components, but it aims to raise thermal efficiency from the 20 percent of a normal gas engine to more than 50 percent, with drastic reductions in weight and size. How? By wasting much less energy during the course of an combustion cycle.?
Up to 80 percent of the energy in fossil fuels is thrown away normal engines through the heat and pressure of exhaust, or dumped to the atmosphere through the radiator. LiquidPiston's design attempt to capture all of that waste within a tiny package.?"We stretched the performance curves in every direction to get much higher efficiency," said?Alec Shkolnik,?President and CEO of LiquidPiston, "We took the best parts of many different thermal cycles and combined them." The design is theoretically capable of 75 percent thermal efficiency, but the group is targeting 57 percent in real world applications, still a huge jump.
The basic idea is similar to a Wankel rotary, but turned on its head. Where the rotor holds the seals in a normal Wankel, the crankcase does that job in the X1 engine. This allows significant reduction in oil consumption over a regular rotary motor. Other enhancements include direct injection, a high compression ratio at 18:1, and a dramatic change to the geometry of the combustion chamber, which maintains a constant volume during ignition. This change means the air-fuel mixture auto-ignites like a diesel, and can be burned much longer than normal. The result is a more complete combustion ending in low emissions and very high chamber pressures. This high pressure is allowed to act on the rotor until it reaches nearly atmospheric pressures, so almost all the available energy is extracted before the exhaust is physically pushed out. Again, this is different than a normal internal combustion engine, which releases very energetic, high-pressure exhaust gas.
Some other slick features: Since the engine is designed to convert so much more heat energy into mechanical force, less heat has to be removed from the block, so there's actually no water cooling system. In cases where the engine is under load and needs to cool down, it can skip an fuel injection event and just suck in cool air, which is then heated by the block and gets exhausted. Another option is to inject water into the combustion chamber. This has three effects: cooling the engine, reducing NOx emissions, and converting some of the water to steam, which increases power.
The compact design of LiquidPiston's lab engine currently tips the scales at 80 lbs for the 40-hp model. It would weigh less than 50 lbs in production, the company claims, far?less than a comparable 40-hp diesel that would tip the scale at around 400 lbs. LiquidPiston's current aim is to continue developing the engine with an eye on the sub-100 hp market?compressors, hybrid range-extenders, military applications, boat engines?and license the intellectual property to manufacturing customers. South Carolina voter ID law trial winds down
WASHINGTON (AP) ? How South Carolina election officials accommodate voters unable to get required photo identification before going to the polls is playing a key role in the legal fight over whether the state's strict voter ID law discriminates against minorities.
A week of testimony in the federal trial of South Carolina's lawsuit against the Obama administration wrapped up Friday with the state's attorney general, Alan Wilson, saying people without cars, birth certificates, not enough time or other "reasonable impediments" to getting photo identification would "absolutely" be allowed to vote under the law.
Wilson gave the explanation to the panel of three federal judges after they asked for clarification on the law's "reasonable impediment" provision, which allows voters to submit signed and notarized affidavits at the poll saying they were unable to get the required ID and naming the reason.
"We have balanced the interest of ensuring the integrity of the electoral system with the fundamental right of the individual to vote," Wilson said outside the courtroom.
Attorneys for the government and opponents of the law disagreed. Richard Dellheim, a Justice Department lawyer, said the state has provided completely different explanations of the provision at other times. He said the law has evolved and changed throughout the Voting Rights Act review and trial process.
"Here we are at the end of the trial, and the facts are still changing," Dellheim said.
Closing arguments are scheduled for Sept. 24, six weeks before the Nov. 6 election. Wilson said the law, if approved by the panel, would go into effect immediately. If it's struck down, the state could appeal the ruling to the Supreme Court.
In the past two weeks, courts in three states have ruled on voting laws. A federal judge in Columbus, Ohio, on Friday granted a request from President Barack Obama's campaign to give all voters in the swing state the option of casting their ballot in person during the three days before Election Day. The law makes an exception for military personnel and Ohio voters living overseas. The judge concluded that the law was unconstitutional in changing the in-person early voting deadline and that the state was wrongly valuing certain votes above others. Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine plans to appeal the decision, likely on Tuesday.
A separate three-judge panel struck down Texas' voter ID law on Thursday. The states' laws are subject to Justice Department approval under the Voting Rights Act because of their history of discrimination against minorities. The Obama administration decision that South Carolina's law violated the act's protections for minority voters prompted South Carolina's suit.
In Pennsylvania, a voter ID law passed by Republicans without Democratic support and signed by GOP Gov. Tom Corbett was upheld by a state appeals court two weeks ago. That ruling will be the subject of a Sept. 13 state Supreme Court hearing in Philadelphia. The Justice Department is also looking at the Pennsylvania law, although the state is not subject to the pre-approval provisions of the Voting Rights Act as Texas and South Carolina are.
During the week, South Carolina sought to show the law was intended to detect fraud and build the public's confidence in the integrity of the election system. State lawmakers who testified denied they intended to discriminate.
State Rep. Alan Clemmons, the law's House sponsor, said the law "doesn't disenfranchise anyone."
But lawyers for the Justice Department and groups opposed to the law have raised doubts about the state's intent by introducing an email exchange with Clemmons and by showing that earlier voter ID legislation allowed for more types of identification to vote and provided early voting periods. They also portrayed the reasonable impediment provision as vague and open to interpretation by hundreds of poll workers and election officials.
"The purpose of (the South Carolina law) was to burden minority voters to a greater extent than white voters and therefore to depress their turnout," Ted Arrington, political science professor at University of North Carolina, Charlotte, and expert in voting behavior and voting systems who testified on behalf of the government, said Friday.
The South Carolina law allows people to vote if they can show a driver's license or other photo ID issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles, a passport, military ID with photo, or a voter registration card that includes a photo.
In the end, the court must decide whether South Carolina's law creates such a burden on minorities that it causes them not to exercise their right to vote.
South Carolina's population is 64 percent white, 28 percent African American and 5 percent Hispanic. State election data produced in the trial showed 30 percent of registered white voters lacked photo IDs, compared to 36 percent of minority voters.
The trial unfolded during the same week Republicans met in Tampa for their convention, and Mitt Romney officially accepted the GOP nomination for president.
Republicans are dealing with a party membership that is increasingly white as the nation's minority populations have increased.
A wave of states with Republican-controlled legislatures and governor's offices, including South Carolina, passed voter ID laws starting last year, in time for some to take effect before the Nov. 6 elections. Critics say they are a direct response to minority turnout in 2008 that helped put Barack Obama in the White House. South Carolina was among seven states considered to have the strictest laws.
A highlight of the trial came when opponents' attorneys questioned Clemmons about an email exchange with a constituent identified as Ed Koziol. Koziol said in an email that a poor, black or elderly person would get the required ID if the South Carolina legislature announced it was giving away $100 bills.
"It would be like a swarm of bees going after a watermelon," Koziol wrote.
Clemmons replied: "Amen, Ed. Thank you for your support of voter ID."
Clemmons acknowledged at the trial that the watermelon reference had "a shade of racism."
The judges on the panel hearing the South Carolina case are Colleen Kollar-Kotelly and John D. Bates of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and Brett M. Kavanaugh of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

One in four has smartphones, one in three of them are iPhones

Between April and June of 2012 4,000 mobile phone or smartphone users aged 13 or above completed a survey, but information on how the sample was generated, more detailed demographics, etc was omitted. Furthermore, the data has been post-processed, I think, to reflect the overall demographics of Japan, so the numbers below can be treated as statistics rather than survey results.
Note that in Japan around 102,700,000 people aged 13 or above have mobile devices.
If we further note that 23.5% of the population own smartphones and Apple is 32.3% of that, in S1 that would put Apple at 7.6%, just behind Sony. Unfortunately, we cannot do a similar simple calculation to estimate Samsung?s market share in Japan.

Alexandria, VA It's not every day that lava flows through a college campus parking lot. But, since January 2010, Syracuse University has been bringing the lava to Central New York. Using commercially available basalt gravel and a coke-fired furnace, the geologists involved with the Syracuse University Lava Project are able to produce a wide range of flow morphologies and other features at a scale comparable to natural flows.
Although one of the most common and voluminous types of lava flows, basaltic lava is still not completely understood. The majority of basaltic eruptions occur out of sight along mid-ocean ridge systems, making them difficult to observe in person. The Syracuse University Lava Project has transformed these typically dangerous and unpredictable events into controlled learning exercises where variables such as composition, temperature, flow rate and slope can be adjusted depending on the experiment. The project, the brainchild of a geologist and an artist, was originally designed to investigate the physical and aesthetic properties of lava as well as to create educational opportunities. The program has since expanded to involve the greater community.

Boston Federal Reserve President Eric Rosengren Issues Unusual Plea For Fed, Bernanke To Take More Action On Economy

Eric Rosengren, the head of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, is issuing an unusual public plea to his colleagues in Washington, urging the nation's central bankers to ignore election-year pressures and do more to jump-start the muddling economy.
Less than a week after Federal Reserve policy makers elected not to take new steps to stimulate the economy, Rosengren in an interview added his voice to a handful of dissenters, saying the central bank has to act at its next meeting in September to revitalize the economy. The Fed should not worry, he said, if the move is seen as influencing the presidential election.

Kurdish rebels attack troops in Turkey, 19 dead
TUNCELI, Turkey (Reuters) - Six Turkish soldiers, two state militiamen and 11 Kurdish militants were killed when the rebels attacked military outposts in southeast Turkey, security sources said on Sunday.
Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan accused unnamed foreign countries of backing the fighters who attacked at least three military bases.
The sources said 16 other soldiers and six civilians were wounded in the overnight attacks on the bases near the town of Cukurca in Hakkari province, which borders Iraq.
Erdogan called the attack "dastardly".
"Turkey has the strength to put enemy nations and circles who hold the strings of the terrorist organization in their place," Erdogan said in statement, without naming any countries.
Clashes between the army and the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) have intensified in recent weeks in a conflict that has lasted 28 years and killed 40,000 people, mainly Kurds.
In a separate operation, air bombardments of PKK positions in the nearby Semdinli region over the last two weeks has forced some villagers from their home, witnesses said.
Some analysts in Turkey warn of a widening conflict after Kurds in northern Syria, some of whom are aligned with the PKK, assert themselves amid a power vacuum as President Bashar al-Assad's troops seek to suppress a rebellion. Erdogan has been one of Assad's most outspoken critics.
Millions of ethnic Kurds live in mostly adjoining areas in Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran.
A senior member of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) said the PKK was acting "in parallel" with Assad's forces.
"The preparations and multi-pronged attack by the PKK in Hakkari exceeds the PKK's capabilities," said Omer Celik, AKP's deputy chairman, according to the Star newspaper's website.
"The PKK, in carrying out the attacks in Semdinli and Hakkari, acted in parallel with the massacres carried out by Assad's forces in Aleppo," Celik was quoted as saying.
HEAVY WEAPONS
In the latest attack in Turkey, a large group of PKK fighters armed with guns and rocket launchers crossed over from northern Iraq, where the organization's leaders are based, to strike the outposts, the security officials said.
All of the soldiers and militia members, so-called village guards, were killed at the Gecimli base, they said. A female PKK suicide bomber blew herself up in the door of another outpost.
The military has sent reinforcements and at least four attack helicopters to the area to fight the PKK and operations were continuing, they said.
In Semdinli, a 200 km (125 mile) drive from Cukurca, Turkish forces have been battling 200 PKK fighters for about two weeks, and at least two soldiers have been killed. Security sources say 50 rebels have also been killed there. Journalists and other non-residents have been barred entry to the Semdinli area.
The PKK has fought for autonomy in Turkey's mainly Kurdish southeast since 1984. Turkey, the United States and the European Union list the PKK as a terrorist organization.
Murat Karayilan, the acting PKK leader, last week said the group was changing tactics with its fight in Semdinli, according to Firat News, a website close to the militants.
Instead of its traditional hit-and-run ambushes on Turkish security forces, PKK fighters would remain positioned in Semdinli in an attempt to form a stronghold there, he said.

ScienceDaily (Aug. 3, 2012) ? In the cognitive sciences, the capacity to interpret the intentions of others is called "Theory of Mind" (ToM). This faculty is involved in the understanding of language, in particular by bridging the gap between the meaning of the words that make up a statement and the meaning of the statement as a whole.
In recent years, researchers have identified the neural network dedicated to ToM, but no one had yet demonstrated that this set of neurons is specifically activated by the process of understanding of an utterance. This has now been accomplished: a team from L2C2 (Laboratoire sur le Langage, le Cerveau et la Cognition, Laboratory on Language, the Brain and Cognition, CNRS / Universit? Claude Bernard-Lyon 1) has shown that the activation of the ToM neural network increases when an individual is reacting to ironic statements.
Published in Neuroimage, these findings represent an important breakthrough in the study of Theory of Mind and linguistics, shedding light on the mechanisms involved in interpersonal communication.
In our communications with others, we are constantly thinking beyond the basic meaning of words. For example, if asked, "Do you have the time?" one would not simply reply, "Yes." The gap between what is said and what it means is the focus of a branch of linguistics called pragmatics. In this science, "Theory of Mind" (ToM) gives listeners the capacity to fill this gap. In order to decipher the meaning and intentions hidden behind what is said, even in the most casual conversation, ToM relies on a variety of verbal and non-verbal elements: the words used, their context, intonation, "body language," etc.
Within the past 10 years, researchers in cognitive neuroscience have identified a neural network dedicated to ToM that includes specific areas of the brain: the right and left temporal parietal junctions, the medial prefrontal cortex and the precuneus. To identify this network, the researchers relied primarily on non-verbal tasks based on the observation of others' behavior[1]. Today, researchers at L2C2 (Laboratoire sur le Langage, le Cerveau et la Cognition, Laboratory on Language, the Brain and Cognition, CNRS / Universit? Claude Bernard-Lyon 1) have established, for the first time, the link between this neural network and the processing of implicit meanings.
To identify this link, the team focused their attention on irony. An ironic statement usually means the opposite of what is said. In order to detect irony in a statement, the mechanisms of ToM must be brought into play. In their experiment, the researchers prepared 20 short narratives in two versions, one literal and one ironic. Each story contained a key sentence that, depending on the version, yielded an ironic or literal meaning. For example, in one of the stories an opera singer exclaims after a premiere, "Tonight we gave a superb performance." Depending on whether the performance was in fact very bad or very good, the statement is or is not ironic.
The team then carried out functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) analyses on 20 participants who were asked to read 18 of the stories, chosen at random, in either their ironic or literal version. The participants were not aware that the test concerned the perception of irony. The researchers had predicted that the participants' ToM neural networks would show increased activity in reaction to the ironic sentences, and that was precisely what they observed: as each key sentence was read, the network activity was greater when the statement was ironic. This shows that this network is directly involved in the processes of understanding irony, and, more generally, in the comprehension of language.
Next, the L2C2 researchers hope to expand their research on the ToM network in order to determine, for example, whether test participants would be able to perceive irony if this network were artificially inactivated.

Some of the actors were instructed to act as though the boxes were heavier (or lighter) than they actually were. Having thus set up deceptive situations, the experimenters asked the participants to determine if they had or had not been deceived by the actors in the films. The films containing feigned actions elicited increased activity in the rTPJ (right temporal parietal junction) compared with those containing unfeigned actions.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The European Central Bank on Thursday laid some of its game plan for tackling the continent's debt crisis, but markets wanted much more.
Stock indexes sank across the U.S. and Europe, the euro fell against the dollar and investors dumped bonds issued by the governments of Spain and Italy. Hopes had been high that the ECB would announce more immediate steps, considering the ECB president's pledge last week to do "whatever it takes" to keep the euro intact.
It was the second day in a row markets were disappointed by a lack of decisive action from a major central bank. On Wednesday, indexes closed lower after the Federal Reserve made only vague promises about its plans for reviving the U.S. economy.
"It's more jawboning, it's more copy and paste from last week," Kenny Polcari, managing director of the brokerage ICAP, said. "There was no definitive plan, and so all the hype and energy (Draghi) created last week is going to go down in flames today."
The Dow Jones industrial average was down 156 points to 12,815 as of 12:45 p.m. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 17 to 1,358. The Nasdaq composite index lost 23 points to 2,898. It was the fourth day in a row of losses; U.S. stocks haven't risen since the promise by ECB President Mario Draghi last week.
Draghi did commit his central bank to more action Thursday, saying it would make a new effort to buy government bonds to drive down borrowing costs for countries like Spain and Italy.
Investors thought the plan was short on detail. Draghi said that policymakers would work out more specifics in the coming weeks. Even with the lack of details, the ECB's willingness to buy more bonds sends a clear message: Europe's financial crisis is getting worse.
The yield, or interest rate, on Spain's benchmark 10-year bond jumped to 7.06 percent from 6.68 percent late Wednesday. The yield on Italy's 10-year bond rose to 6.29 percent from 5.85 percent. The 7 percent rate is a crucial flash point, because that's the rate at which other countries have found themselves unable to pay their bills.
To be fair, the ECB faces a Herculean task with no easy solutions. Whatever it does is sure to offend someone, and skeptics doubt that it has any weapons left in its arsenal that could make a big difference. Some of the weaker countries in Europe, like Greece, have been resistant to the spending cuts the ECB has tried to impose as part of a solution.
In the U.S., General Motors and Kellogg reported lower quarterly profits, which they attributed partly to Europe.

Sprinters competing in the 2012 Olympics might assume their championship performance is the result of their fuel-efficient physiology.
But a new study disproves the classic scientific view that conserving energy maximizes performance in a sprinting event.
The study by biomechanics researchers Matthew W. Bundle at the University of Montana and Peter G. Weyand at Southern Methodist University, Dallas, demonstrates that metabolic economy is not an important factor for performance in events lasting 60 seconds or less.
In fact, just the opposite is true.
"That prevailing view is no longer viable," said Weyand. "Sprinters, if anything, are wasteful of energy. This is due to the biological trade-offs between faster muscle fibers that provide the large and rapid forces needed for sprinting, and slower muscle fibers that maximize metabolic economy."
Instead, the key to top-flight sprinting is to maximize how hard each foot hits the ground, which allows sprinters to translate musculoskeletal and ground reaction forces into swift motion, said Bundle.
"Saving energy is critically important for endurance, but not for sprinting, which our findings indicate is not energy-limited," Bundle said.
Metabolic energy available from sustainable, aerobic sources predominantly determines performance during endurance events by setting the intensity of the musculoskeletal performance that can be sustained throughout the effort, the study found.
For sprinters, Bundle and Weyand conclude the opposite is true.
"The intensity of the mechanical activity that the musculoskeletal system can (for a very short time) achieve determines the quantities of metabolic energy released and the level of performance attained," according to the study.
The authors reported their findings in "Sprint Exercise Performance: Does Metabolic Power Matter?" in the July issue of Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews, http://bit.ly/ODvCrk.
Sprint performance variations are a function of external forces
The authors write in their study that athletic performance can be analyzed considering either the input to, or the output from, the skeletal muscles that serve as biological engines. Input is the chemical energy that fuels muscular contraction. Output is the force or mechanical power the contractions produce.
To analyze the mechanics of burst-type sprint activities, the authors said they drew on all-out running speeds and cycling power outputs of humans because of the abundance and quality of the data available and because the mechanical and metabolic contrasts between the two provide informative insights. The authors focused on durations of up to five minutes, particularly on efforts of less than a minute.
For both exercises, differences in sprinting performance were predominantly a function of the magnitude of the external forces applied because running contact lengths and cycling down-stroke lengths, as well as stride and pedal frequency, exhibited limited variations. Additionally, for both cycling and running, external forces applied during sprinting are believed to be consistently related to the corresponding muscle forces, regardless of the intensity or duration of the effort.
So what determines the maximum external forces the musculoskeletal system can apply during a brief, all-out sprint? And why do those forces decrease over the duration of the sprint?
The researchers assessed neuromuscular activation using a diagnostic procedure called surface electromyography to measure electrical activity in the activated muscle fibers. That assessment showed that neuromuscular activation increases continuously during all-out sprint cycling and running trials. More rapid increases were typical for the briefest trials that required the greatest forces. That indicates that all-out sprinting performances are highly dependent on duration because of the speed of musculoskeletal fatigue during dynamic exercise requiring large force outputs, the authors reported.
Sprint performance linked to mechanics of applying external force
Bundle and Weyand altered three independent variables to maximize the variation observed in sprint performance: Subjects were individuals with large differences in their sprint performance capabilities; all-out sprint trials spanned a broad range of durations from 2 to 300 seconds; and performance was compared across different modes of sprinting, namely cycling and running.
"The predictive success of our force application model, both within and across modes of sprint exercise, indicates that as efforts extend from a few seconds to a few minutes, the fractional reliance on anaerobic metabolism progressively impairs whole-body musculoskeletal performance, and does so with a rapid and remarkably consistent time course," the authors wrote. "In this respect, the sprint portion of the performance-duration curve predominantly represents, not a limit on the rates of energy re-supply, but the progressive impairment of skeletal muscle force production that results from a reliance on anaerobic metabolism to fuel intense, sequential contractions."
Conclusion of study departs from prevailing physiological paradigm
Since the muscular engines of humans and other animals are similar in terms of their metabolic and mechanical function, the findings likely apply to the burst performance capabilities of vertebrate animals in general, say the researchers.
